All schools in the Brea-Olinda Unified district remain closed. Tonner Canyon and Brea Canyon off-ramps to the 57 freeway are now open. Carbon Canyon Road is now open to residents as long as they show ID. Part of Carbon Canyon still closedNovember 18th, 2008, 7:03 am by Marilyn Kalfus, real estate reporterRegister staff writer Serena Daniels has these traffic updates this morning: Carbon Canyon Road between Valencia Avenue and Chino Hills remains closed as a result of fires that have created havoc in Yorba Linda, Brea and Anaheim Hills over the weekend and into Monday. Only local residents will be allowed onto that corridor, said California Highway Patrol officer Denise Quesada. Authorities did not say when the road would reopen to the public. All freeways are open. Over the weekend, the 57 freeway closed and Metrolink’s Inland Empire-Orange County Line service was temporarily suspended. The freeway reopened Sunday and train service resumed Monday.
Some evacuations still in effect todayNovember 18th, 2008, 6:46 am by Marilyn Kalfus, real estate reporterEvacuations remained in effect today for the Carbon Canyon areas of Olinda Village and Hollydale Mobile Home Park in Brea, as well as the Carbon Canyon areas of Sleepy Hollow and Oak Tree Downs in Chino Hills, the Orange County Fire Authority says. Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified and Walnut Valley Unified school district campuses are expected to reopen today. But all public schools in the Brea-Olinda Unified School District will remain closed, City News Service reports. St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School in Yorba Linda was expected to remain closed, possibly through the end of the week. St. Angela Merici Catholic School, Vineyard Christian Preschool & Elementary in Anaheim and Calvary Christian School in Yorba Linda were all closed Monday, and it was unclear if they would reopen today, CNS said.
Wildfires 60 percent contained, crews assessing causeNovember 17th, 2008, 9:36 pm by Cameron BirdO.C. Register Staff Writer Kimberly Edds reports: With 9 miles to go, fire crews are working tonight to finish buttoning-up the perimeter of the Anaheim Hills, Corona, Yorba Linda and Brea brush fires. The fires, which merged, are 60 percent contained. Ten strike teams, or 50 fire engines, were relieved of duty today and a large number of firefighters will demobilize tomorrow. Two firefighters sustained minor injuries today. Damage assessment teams from the Orange County and Los Angeles county fire departments remain in the burn areas, as they try and get a handle on the extent of destruction.
Firefighting costs as of tonight have crept up to $10,719,066, according to officials. The Riverside County division of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection is investigating the cause and origin of the fire, but has yet to release findings. Because the fire holds no smoking gun — no obvious cause — investigators have to tediously sift through the entire area near Green River for signs of ignition, including Items as small as match heads.
Fire officials are also looking into reports of water delivery problems in the Yorba Linda area. The Yorba Linda Water District recently unveiled a new headquarters and just broke ground on $11.2 million project to replace a 95-year-old reservoir, one of the oldest in Orange County. At the Cascade Apartments in Anaheim, as well as other Anaheim and Yorba housing tracts earlier today, firefighters sifted through rubble to retrieve residents’ belongings. Those who have lost apartments were given the opportunity to move into unoccupied units. Tomorrow, Cascade residents will be allowed to go back in themselves at staggered time blocks. Evacuation centers at Katella and Valencia high schools were closed today. Firefighters are encouraging displaced and/or distraught residents to visit an assistance center being set up at the East Anaheim Gymnasium, 8165 E. Santa Ana Canyon Road, which will provide insurance, social, mental and home assessment services under one roof.

More videos: Brea Olinda Unified Schools closed TuesdayNovember 17th, 2008, 3:12 pm by John Crandall, Staff WriterO.C Register staff writer Lou Ponsi reports: Brea Olinda Unified Schools will be closed Tuesday and Brea Olinda High School could remain closed through Friday, district Superintendent Skip Roland said. Roland said initial cost estimates of clean up at school sites is up to $2 million and perhaps $1 million more to re build Brea Canyon High School and damage to Brea Olinda High School, which were ravaged by flames coming from all sides. “We’re looking at 300,000 square feet of campus space and it is not something that can be completed in one day,” said Roland of cleanup at the high school campus. Tuesday will be spent installing special air filtration systems into the air-conditioning units throughout the district, Roland said. Roland said the district doesn’t yet know when or if the students will make up the lost days. Roland said all staff has been given assignments and will report to their locations tomorrow. Returning Brea evacuees could face phone, power outagesNovember 17th, 2008, 2:52 pm by John Crandall, Staff WriterO.C. staff writer Lou Ponsi reports in Brea: When Brea evacuees return home after fleeing the Freeway Complex fire, they could face on-and-off phone and electricity for several days, a Brea official said. Brea Emergency Manager Anna Cave said there are up to 125 power poles down in Carbon Canyon. Authorities are hoping to allow residents back in to Olinda Village and Hollydale Mobile Home Park by 5 p.m., however residents need to be aware that phone service — both land lines and cell service — as well as electricity could be intermittent for several days. Edison crews are in the area assessing the situation. Even after Olinda Village residents are allowed back to their homes, Carbon Canyon Road will likely remain closed for up to four days, from Olinda Drive east. “We are concerned about many issues,” Cave said. “Many phone services are hit or miss and we are getting more miss. … Residents will not necessarily be going back to optimum conditions.” When asked if she could provide a financial tally of the cost of this fire to Brea, Cave said, “No, but it is significant … and at a time when budget issues are staring us in the face, our goal is to make good decisions and provide good documentation.” It could be a few days before the final costs are counted and Cave said the city should be reimbursed for part of the bill.
