Brea Olinda Unified Schools closed Tuesday

November 17th, 2008, 3:12 pm by John Crandall, Staff Writer

O.C Register staff writer Lou Ponsi reports:

Brea Olinda Unified Schools will be closed Tuesday and Brea Olinda High School could remain closed through Friday, district Superintendent Skip Roland said.

Roland said initial cost estimates of clean up at school sites is up to $2 million and perhaps $1 million more to re build Brea Canyon High School and damage to Brea Olinda High School, which were ravaged by flames coming from all sides.

“We’re looking at 300,000 square feet of campus space and it is not something that can be completed in one day,” said Roland of cleanup at the high school campus.

Tuesday will be spent installing special air filtration systems into the air-conditioning units throughout the district, Roland said.

Roland said the district doesn’t yet know when or if the students will make up the lost days.

Roland said all staff has been given assignments and will report to their locations tomorrow.

Red Cross closing 2 evacuation shelters; Brea Community Center remains open

November 17th, 2008, 11:25 am by John Crandall, Staff Writer

The American Red Cross of Orange County is closing two of its three shelters because of a significant decrease in the number of shelter residents.

The following shelter remains open: Brea Community Center, 695 Madison Ave., Brea, at the corner of Madison and Randolph.

The shelters at Katella and Valencia high schools are closing and evacuees should go to the Brea Community Center instead.

Since Saturday, Red Cross shelters in Orange County have registered 893 people, provided 192 evacuees with overnight stays and served more than 1,125 meals. As of this morning, 118 volunteers and 37 partner agency staff members have assisted with the Red Cross response.

In addition, a call center has been established at (714) 384-0884 to assist those affected by the fire as well as those who want to help. The call center will operate from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Brea Olinda Unified schools to reopen Tuesday

November 17th, 2008, 10:43 am by William Diepenbrock, Editor

Orange County Register schools reporter Fermin Leal reports the following today:

Students in Brea Olinda Unified will return to classes Tuesday, district officials say.

Classes for all 6,000 students at 10 campuses were canceled today after this weekend’s brush fires. District officials said this morning that nine of the campuses will be able to return to full operations by Tuesday.

Brea Olinda Unified students will also not be required to make up today’s lost day of instruction because of a state law that allows school districts to cancel classes when the governor calls for a state of emergency because of a natural disaster.

Districts, which receive some of their state funding based on daily attendance, also receive their full funding allocations during a state of emergency.

Students from Brea Canyon High, a small continuation school that sustained significant fire damage, will be sent to adjacent Brea Olinda High, officials said.

Brea Canyon sustained damage in the following areas:

  • Four permanent classrooms in the east wing of the campus
  • Two modular classrooms
  • All landscaping and irrigation campuswide

There was no damage to the main office or kitchen area, and one classroom in the west wing. Brea Canyon will likely be closed for up to three months, officials said.

Superintendent Skip Rowland spent much of the morning today touring fire-damaged Brea Canyon High with insurance inspectors. An estimate of the cost to repair Brea Canyon is not yet available.

Brea Olinda High also had some fire damage to its baseball field and other surrounding areas, but the school will be able to reopen without any problems, officials said.
