Red Cross closing 2 evacuation shelters; Brea Community Center remains open

November 17th, 2008, 11:25 am by John Crandall, Staff Writer

The American Red Cross of Orange County is closing two of its three shelters because of a significant decrease in the number of shelter residents.

The following shelter remains open: Brea Community Center, 695 Madison Ave., Brea, at the corner of Madison and Randolph.

The shelters at Katella and Valencia high schools are closing and evacuees should go to the Brea Community Center instead.

Since Saturday, Red Cross shelters in Orange County have registered 893 people, provided 192 evacuees with overnight stays and served more than 1,125 meals. As of this morning, 118 volunteers and 37 partner agency staff members have assisted with the Red Cross response.

In addition, a call center has been established at (714) 384-0884 to assist those affected by the fire as well as those who want to help. The call center will operate from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Evacuations still in place in Brea, city spokeswoman says

November 17th, 2008, 9:53 am by John Crandall, Staff Writer

O.C. Register staff writer Lou Ponsi reports from Brea:

Evacuations are still in place for Hollydale Mobile Home Park and Olinda Village, said Anna Lee Cave, emergency services manager with Brea.

Cave said there are 10-15 downed power poles in the canyon and that Southern California Edison has as many as 20 crews in Carbon Canyon assessing the situation.

Phone lines are also down in the canyon. Cave did not give an estimated time when residents will be allowed back in those areas.

“Our goal is to get them into their homes as quickly as possible,” Cave said. “But the safety of our residents has to be our No. 1 concern and replacing these power poles just takes a lot of time.”

“When you have a two-line road and crews taking up 1 1/2 lanes, that is a safety issue.”

Cave said 28 evacuees, most from the canyon area, stayed at the Brea Community Center overnight.

“Brea is an improving condition,” she said. “There is only one road closure and that is Carbon Canyon Road, east of Valencia,” which is the road that heads into the canyon.

Brea still has ‘priority’ fire near Tonner Canyon Road, says city spokesperson

November 16th, 2008, 1:38 pm by John Crandall, Staff Writer

OC Register Reporter Lou Ponsi reports from Brea:

The area around Tonner Canyon Road is still burning, according to a spokesperson for the city of Brea.

Cindie Ryan, Brea public information officer, said that the fire – located east of the 57 Freeway - is a “priority” for local emergency crews.

Three new hot spots were also smoldering in Olinda Village, Ryan said while at the city’s Emergency Operations Center.

Evacuees are still not allowed back in their neighborhoods.

No fire-related arrests or injuries have been reported in Brea.

16-year-old student Cody Somerville, who is in the Brea Olinda School band, said that several members of the band left their cars in the school parking lot Saturday night after a competition at Tesoro High School.

Somerville says he hopes his car is undamaged.

With the Brea Public schools closed Monday, Somerville knows what he’s planning to do.

“I’ll do my homework that I should have done last night,” Somerville said.
