The American Red Cross of Orange County will close the Brea Community Center shelter following a significant decrease in the number of shelter residents.

The Red Cross will have a representative at a local assistance center established to help those affected by the fires.

The assistance center will be located at the East Anaheim Gym at 8165 E. Santa Ana Canyon Road Anaheim.

This center will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. for two weeks or as long as needed.

Federal, state and local agencies will be on hand to provide information about resources and aid available to victims of the recent fires.

Since Saturday, Red Cross shelters in Orange County have registered 919 people, provided 220 evacuees with overnight stays and served more than 1,320 meals.  As of Monday evening, 150 volunteers and 38 partner agency staff have assisted with the Red Cross response.

The Red Cross is urging all Orange County residents to view this incident as a reminder to take some basic steps to be ready for any emergency:

1)      Get a disaster supplies kit with at least three days of food and water for each family member (including pets), flashlight, battery operated radio and important documents.

2)      Make an emergency plan that includes where to meet following a disaster and the phone number for an out-of-state contact

3)      Be informed about the potential dangers in the area and know how local authorities will notify the community

Shelter occupants pray their homes are OK

November 16th, 2008, 6:50 pm by Jeff Collins

Mary Purcio, left, and Elaine Scott at Brea shelter Saturday

O.C. Register reporters Deepa Bharath and Lou Ponsi report from Brea:

At least 50 people remained by 5 p.m. today at the Brea Community Center where the Red Cross has set up a temporary shelter for victims of the wildfire.

Residents from Olinda Village and the Hollydale Mobile Home Park worried about the fate of their homes and digested the news that three homes in the area off Carbon Canyon Road were destroyed.

“I feel horrible,” said Salma Norman, a resident of Olinda Village, surprised at the news that a home on her street, Lilac Lane, was badly damaged. “I wish I knew something about my house. Not knowing anything about anything is horrible.”

Norman said she had no opportunity to pick up her belongings. She was at work all Saturday and at the mall after work, Norman said.

“When I tried to go back home last night there were barricades everywhere and my brother and I had to come to the community center for the night,” she said.

Brea update: Mobile homes, residences still evacuted

November 16th, 2008, 7:30 am by John Dunphy

Register reporter Lou Ponsi is reporting from the Brea Community Center.

Anthony Godoy, a spokesman for the city said they’ve had about 230 folks filter through here since yesterday, and about 65 stayed over night. Most from Yorba Linda and Brea. About 30 City employees are here working. There are about 30 cots in the gym here. The BCC is also housing small pets and currently there are close 18 dogs and two cats.

Collin Reedy of Orange County Animal Control Service has been keeping and eye on the pets.

“If we get too many, we’ll have to send them to the animal shelter (accross the street) from the Block (of Orange.)

Chris Reimer, the PIO for the city reports 148 evacuated from Olinda Village, 148 from Hollydale Mobile Home Park, 126 from Somerset Condominiums and folks from Canyon County and Heritage Hills neighborhoods but no numbers from those places.

On loss of property: “I understand we have had some units lost in Hollydale and Oliinda Village but we have no numbers,” Remier said.

I spoke with Willard Hansen, who evacuated the Vintage Canyon Senior appartment complex (for people 62 and older) on Brea Blvd. north of Central Ave. Willard and his wife Veronica have been at the BCC since yesterday afternoon. He said the police came to the building and asked people to leave. About 100 apartments there.

“We are at the base of the canyon,” Willard said. “We could see the smoke when we left.”

“We didn’t have another place to go,” he said.

They are hoping to go back about 8 a.m. He hasn’t slept much but his wife slept fine but complained she was a built chilly from the air conditioner.

“It’s going well. I was pleased with the people who’ve offered us services and goods.”

Register photographer Jebb Harris, who was one of the area evacuees, gives us this description of the fire area:

Going east on Carbon Canyon Rd. from Valencia, is Olinda Ranch, fairly new, on north side of street . On south side is Carbon Canyon Regional Pk. Going East El Rodeo stable is on North. on South is Chino hills pk. Two miles in is Hollydale Mobile home park & Samsung Church (big white steeple w/ cross) on south. On North is Olinda Village (me). going east just a couple of ranches & stables for next mile till you hit county line in sleepy hollow.

Samsunp Presbyterian Korean Church in Carbon Canyon is safe and intact but the four or five staffers that were there were evacuated about 4 a.m., Also, all services are being moved to Westridge Golf Club in La Habra. Services are being condensed to one service at 11 a.m.

Quick update on the North Orange County fire

November 15th, 2008, 5:16 pm by Tony Saavedra, Register investigative reporter

If only by the numbers, the “Freeway Complex” fires in Brea, Yorba Linda, Anaheim and Corona is turning into a monster. In Anaheim alone, 10,000 people have been evacuated from 3,600 homes. Uncounted more folks have been forced to leave their homes in Yorba Linda, Brea and Corona. So far, 14 structures in Corona,  11 Anaheim Hills, 30 in Yorba Linda and 1 in Brea — Brea-Canyon Continuation School — have been damaged or destroyed, for a total of 56. Flames have scorched at least 2,000 acres. (The scary part is that officials acknowledged that as of 5 p.m. the numbers were probably outdated and bouned to be worse.)

Evacuation centers were set up at Katella High School, 2200 E. Wagner, Anaheim; Tommy Lasorda Field House, 4701 Casa Loma Avenue, Yorba Linda; Anaheim Downtown Community Center, 250 E. Center St., Brea Community Center, 695 Madison Avenue; Valencia High School, 500 N. Bradford,  in Placenia, for Yorba Linda residents.
